This is the dinner I ate at College Night at IHOP last Wednesday or Thursday. I was excited when we got this assignment because this was the first time I'd eaten dinner in over a week.

EUC Detail

This is a detail of the Minerva statue outside of the Elliot University Center. I felt that it was important to capture this as part of the EUC even if it is outside and not in.

I really like these. Jon's head is a little flat, but I think they both turned out well.

Center Table Vignette

I had actually done a thumbnail sized drawing of the TA's before this assignment was given so I thought it was funny when Suzanne gave directions to draw the table. I think my quick drawings turn out really well, but I hope to learn how to stop dog-hairing my lines.

Foreshortening

I liked the foreshortening exercise that we did, but I don't feel like it gave enough experience. I hope to practice more with it because I feel that it is a very important technique to understand.

Gesture Drawings: Bootcamp Cabrera Style

When we did the gesture drawings in class I was pleased how they turned out. Like Suzanne suggests, I tend to start with the head, go to shoulders and arms and work down from there. I try to add in hair detail when I do the head and I draw the contour of the clothing when I do the body. If I have the time afterwards I try to go back and add clothing details (e.g. folds, pockets, prints, etc.). If I feel it is necessary because I know that I'll later develop the picture, I'll draw in a quick stick-man face to remind me of certain facial features and emotions.
For part of the homework, I used my roommate's Maxim calendar. I couldn't resist! I felt that it was a good opportunity to draw people who weren't wearing much as opposed to what I'm used to. Many of my other drawings came from observations in the dance studios here at UNCG and cheerleading practice at Greensboro All Stars gym.

These are the feet that I drew the other day in class. I didn't have a good vantage point, so I drew some feet in different angles.

One thing I like about this picture is that the artist says that in reality, the sketch is only about two inches high. It is great that he can get so much detail in such a small, small space and convey the idea of a much larger image. I think that his lines show a lot of thought, observation and skill.





Marney Pike
I chose this image because although it is a gesture drawing of a person, the intent is to capture the rhythm of the movement and position of the person and not to actually represent a person.





Rebecca Reece
The main way that I judge whether or not I like a person's work is if I look at a piece and can tell myself that I would still like it if I had done it myself. These figures are simple and fairly generic but I admire them any way. There is a strong sense of masculinity and an image of a Hollister display comes to mind. I love the linework in the jeans.





Cindy Woods
What I like about these drawings is how similar they are to a wire sculpture. Woods used thought out, clean lines and ended up with a nice figure drawing. In high school, I had developed a drawing style very similar to this and I enjoyed the similarities.






Nathan Lewis
This stood out to me because we had done a similar exercise with Nadia last semester. I love a good cross-contour when I see one and I really like how this artist applied the technique to a human figure.

Watercolor Vignettes

These vignettes are of food on my shelf in my dorm room, the clock behind my bed and my studio desk. I used artist pens for the line work and watercolor pencils for the color. The drawing of my studio was done during the "musical desks" exercise our class did last week and I am glad with how it turned out.
